One woman's last-minute decision to hike the majestic Grand Canyon results in a life-altering change. In early 2017, Lisa Abelar found herself fleeing an abusive marriage, struggling daily to keep her head above water and her kids safe. Though she’d only ever been to the Grand Canyon once as a teen, years prior, she agreed at the last minute to join a guided camping trip into the Grand Canyon. She wasn’t seeking spirituality. "I felt compelled to upload this mini-doc from 4 years ago after the recent tragic events in Haiti. Les Cayes (where those mini doc was shot) is at the centre of the shallow 7.2 earthquake this week killing over 1000 people and destroying the town... Including part of the Hospital of Immaculate conception where the medical aid in this video took place. The orphanage was hit but with no casualties, heartbreaking though the children are outside in tropical storm Grace until the engineers can clear the dorms. I enclose these details because what was already an area of extreme bad luck and poverty, it again gets hit by natural disaster and ruin. Meet the Maker: Hopi Artist Creates a Basket to Unite the World

In a small room that connects Iskasokpu Gallery to the home of Iva Honyestewa, floor-to-ceiling shelves line the walls and a window looks out over an Arizona canyon striated in color. Iva—Hopi name Honwynum, which means Female Bear Walking—weaves two traditional Hopi baskets, the coil (poota) and the sifter (tutsaya). For Iva, basketweaving is both a spiritual endeavor and a communal activity. When she weaves alone, it's meditation. When she weaves with others, it’s a time to talk and laugh. Iva's creation, the pootsaya, emerged in 2014, during her artist residency at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, and it's the first of its kind in the world. Now, Iva and her niece Reba Ann Lomayestewa, whom Iva taught how to weave the pootsaya, are the only basketweavers making it.
